Satyajit
Ray -
Legendary Indian Film Producer
Satyajit
Ray was known for his humanistic approach
to filmmaking; a careful blend of relationships,
emotions, struggle, conflicts, joys and
sorrows. Although his films were made
in Bengali, they are of universal interest
to all walks of life.
"He
is controlled, precise, meticulous, and
yet, evokes deep emotional response from
the audience. His films depict a fine sensitivity
without using melodrama or dramatic excesses.
He evolved a cinematic style that is almost
invisible. He strongly believed that: 'The
best technique is the one that's not
noticeable'."
Ray was directly involved in and controlled
most aspects of his films, writing all the
screenplays of his films, designing sets
and costumes, composing the musical scores,
designing the publicity posters as well as
producing and directing his films.
Famed producer Akira Kurosawa wrote:
"The quiet but deep observation, understanding
and love of the human race, which are characteristic
of all his films, have impressed me greatly.
...I feel that he is a "giant" of the
movie industry."
 Among
many honors received, he received
the honorary Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement
in 1992 - "In recognition of his rare
mastery of the art of motion pictures and
for his profound humanitarian outlook, which
has had an indelible influence on filmmakers
and audiences throughout the world."
